General FAQs

Do I need to prepare anything for a free discovery call with Shape Dogs?

To get the most out of our free discovery calls, we recommend coming prepared with any questions that you have for us and a clear idea of your goals and what you hope to achieve from our training programmes, this way we can make sure that nothing gets missed and advise you on the best course of action for you and your dog.

I don't feel very confident using technology, can we still work together?

Of course! All of our training programmes feature free, unlimited WhatsApp support and a free discovery call that takes place on Zoom which we'll provide guidance for, but we're more than happy to help you through any other technical questions you may have and can adapt to what you're comfortable using as well.

What type of training techniques does Shape Dogs use?

Shape Dogs only use positive reinforcement / force-free training techniques. This means that we won't use e-collars, prong collars, or tools and training techniques designed to be painful or issue a correction to your dog, because of the detrimental effect this can have on your dog's well-being and confidence.

What is positive reinforcement / force-free training?

With positive reinforcement based / force-free training, the focus is capturing and rewarding the dog for behaviour you like to see, and managing the dog and their environment so that they can't rehearse and find reinforcement in unwanted behaviours. Our training methods are backed by a growing body of scientific research into the most effective training approaches, and are designed to help your dog increase their confidence, resilience and troubleshooting.

How much do your training programmes cost?

This is dependent on what we decide is the best course of action for your dog and their training plan. All of our training programmes have varying lengths and costs, so the best way to find out is to book a free discovery call where we can advise on a training programme suitable for your dog and your lifestyle.

How do I pay for your training programmes?

After your free discovery call – when we've agreed the best course of action for your dog and their training plan – we'll send you a secure payment link where you can pay for your training programme by card.

Does Shape Dogs offer training with senior dogs?

Yes, we work with dogs all sizes, ages and breeds.

Separation Anxiety FAQs

How long will separation anxiety training take?

The duration of separation anxiety training can vary depending on the severity of the anxiety and the individual dog. Some dogs may show improvement within a few weeks, while others may require several months of consistent training and management. Our goal is to work at a pace that is comfortable for your dog and ensures lasting results. We'll provide a customised plan and keep track of progress throughout your training programme so that we can spot anything that might be impacting your dog's training too.

How can I tell if my dog has separation anxiety?

Signs of separation anxiety in dogs can include excessive barking or howling when left alone, destructive behaviours (chewing furniture, digging), attempts to escape, pacing, and excessive salivation or panting. Some dogs may also exhibit signs of distress when you prepare to leave the house as they recognise what we call "departure cues". If you notice these behaviours regularly when your dog is alone, it may be a sign of separation anxiety.

What causes separation anxiety?

No one really knows, but research suggests separation anxiety may be caused by a variety of factors, including moving to a new home, the loss of a family member or another pet, or a lack of early socialisation. And some dogs are more prone to anxiety due to their temperament, early maternal experiences or genetic predisposition. The cause of your dog's separation anxiety is not something we need to worry about though, as all separation anxiety is treated the same with gradual exposure.

What training methods do you use?

We use gradual exposure training methods, which expose the dog to the things it finds scary (being home alone) at a very easy, low level that they can handle. Going at the dog's pace, we gradually increase the difficulty all while keeping the dog’s fear levels extremely low, which is why we place so much importance on you becoming an expert in your dog's body language. This is important so that we can end sessions whenever your dog starts showing that they're uncomfortable and making sure we're building up a bank of stress-free, home alone sessions for your dog.

How much support will we have through a training programme?

You can expect unlimited WhatsApp support through every training programme that we offer, because we believe this is essential to helping you and your dog progress. We'll be able to review any videos that you have and provide advice, be on-hand to answer questions and we'll suggest any modifications to your training plan as and when needed. But more than anything, we just want to be available as your personal cheerleader, so let us know your wins as well as any challenges you face!
